I am working with a chemist who is in carer transition, and she’s looking at a variety of companies. in a recent email she mentioned a particular company, and said “I’m not sure if they’d hire me….”
IMHO, she’s thinking exactly backwards – her first thought should not be “Will they hire me?” but “Do I want to work there?” Exploring options, and seeing what’s out there is great, and something everyone should be doing. But instead of trying to fit into the first position that seems mildly interesting, you need to keep looking until you find the position where you can’t wait to get to work each morning.
In other words, don’t try to force yourself to fit into whatever opening a company has, but try to find the opening that matches what you want to do. You can pound a round peg into a square hole, but who wants to be the peg that gets pounded? Go out and find the right hole for you!
Bodacious review covering t Pound Yourself Into a Hole! Thoroughly love this point of view.
